10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (2022)

There’s no mystery as to why doctors are seen as the most important members of society – but unfortunately, humanity has had its share of heartbreak thanks to derailed medical practitioners. They say there are worse things on Earth than one can imagine, but when medical “angels” turn to “demons” even the most prolific imagination finds its limits.

Below is a list of the ten most evil doctors history has ever recorded – doctors you really should try to avoid in the ER.

Dr. Walter Freeman

1895 – 1972

10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (1)

Walter Jackson Freeman II was an American doctor and member of the American Psychiatric Association. Although he is the only one on our list who hasn’t performed a direct criminal practice on his patients, he can be blamed for harming as many as 3,400 people by using a very controversial and primitive medical technique: the lobotomy.

His operations were performed by inserting a metal pick into the corner of each eye socket, moving it back and forth, and thereby severing the connections to the pre-frontal cortex in the frontal lobes of the brain. This method did not require a neurosurgeon and could be performed outside of an operating room without the use of anesthesia. Freeman actually used his personal van as a surgery room, which he called the “lobotomobile”.

Dr. Freeman was finally banned from performing surgery after the death of some of his patients from brain hemorrhage.

Dr. Linda Burfield

1867 – 1938

10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (2)

Dr. Linda Burfield demanded to be addressed as “Dr. Hazzard” by her patients – strangely enough this didn’t raise any red flags. She was not technically a doctor, having never graduated from medical school, yet worked as a medical clinic manager as well as licensed medical practitioner in Washington State in the USA.

She’s infamous not necessarily for the number of lives she claimed (15 patients by official police records), but for the unconventional and dangerous methods she promoted for curing diseases. Burfield encouraged the idea that fasting cures almost all ailments – from a simple cold to cancer. To this end she subjected her patients to a draconian diet that lacked basic nutritional elements; it included only two bowls of tomato broth and one or two small oranges a day, for a period as long as one whole month.

In 1912 she was sentenced to two years in prison, after being accused of manslaughter over the death of Claire Williamson, a wealthy British woman who weighed less than 50lb at the time of her death. After her release from prison, she opened a new clinic publicly known as a “school of health” where she continued to starve credulous patients looking for a miraculous cure.

Dr. Hazzard died in 1938 while attempting a fasting cure on herself.

Dr. Marcel Petiot

1897 – 1946

10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (3)

Marcel Andre Henri Felix Petitot was a French serial killer who conducted his criminal activity during the first and second World Wars. What qualifies Petitot as a worthy presence on our list is a body count of around 60 patients.

After being injured and sent home in the First World War, Petitot completed medical school and started working as an intern in a mental hospital – a controversial appointment as Petitot himself was diagnosed with various mental illnesses during the Great War. After his internship, Dr. Petitot managed to attract patients with fake credentials and built an impressive reputation for his practice. However, rumors of illegal abortions and excessive prescriptions of addictive remedies began to swirl around his clinic.

Petitot`s first victim is said to be Louise Delaveau, the daughter of an elderly patient, with whom he had an affair. Delaveau disappeared, and neighbors later said they had seen Petitot load a trunk into his car. Police investigated but eventually dismissed her case as a runaway.

The truth about Dr. Petitot`s practice was revealed when his neighbors again complained to police – this time of a foul stench in the area and of large amounts of smoke billowing from his chimney. Fearing a chimney fire, the police summoned firemen, who entered the house to find a roaring fire in a coal stove in the basement. In the fire, and scattered in the basement, were human remains.
After being trialed, Petitot was beheaded on 25 May 1946.

Dr. Michael Swango

born 1954

10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (4)

Michael Swango is a former medical doctor, former U.S. Marine recruit and a prolific serial killer with more than 60 deaths attributed to him. As with almost all the other doctors on our list, Dr. Swango’s career as a serial killer goes hand in hand with his clinical practice.

Nurses working with Swango began noticing that apparently healthy patients were dying mysteriously with alarming frequency. Each time, Swango had been the floor intern. One nurse caught him injecting some “medicine” into a patient who later became strangely ill. His co-workers also began noticing that whenever Swango prepared the coffee or brought any food in, several of them became violently ill with no apparent cause. Swango was investigated for poisoning his patients and colleagues, found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison.

But that wasn’t the end of Swango: after his release, he changed his name by forging IDs and was welcomed back into medical life as Dr. Daniel J. Adams. As you might expect, his patients and colleagues stared dying. After being investigated for a second time, he fled to Zimbabwe to avoid criminal charges. Here he began working as – you guessed it – a doctor.

Dr. Swango was finally foiled in 2000, when he pleaded guilty for murder and fraud charges. He was sentenced to three consecutive life terms. During the trial, prosecutors read lurid passages from Swango’s notebook, describing the joy he felt during his crimes.

6

Dr. Jayant Patel

born 1950

10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (5)

Jayant Mukundray Patel is the only doctor on our list who – even though 87 patients died by his hands – was not carrying out any experiments, had no mental problems or murderous intent whatsoever. Patel’s issue was his gross incompetence and lack of hygiene.

Patel is an Indian surgeon who immigrated to the U.S. While working in Portland, Oregon, his colleagues alleged he performed surgery when not rostered to work, operated on other surgeon’s patients, operated unnecessarily and caused serious injury and death.

In 2003, Patel moved to Australia, where inadequacies in his practice were quickly identified. Colleagues described his surgery as “antiquated” and “sloppy”. Nurses claimed that they hid their patients from him when they knew he was in the hospital. He attracted the nickname “Dr. Death”; and it’s alleged he altered medical records in order to hide his inadequacies.

Patel is linked to at least 87 deaths amongst the 1.202 patients he treated between 2003 and early 2005 but considering that his practice spread over 20 years, the real number of his victims will remain a mystery.
In 2010 Patel was charged with the unlawful killing of three patients, and injuring a fourth. He pleaded not guilty to all charges, but was found guilty and sentenced to seven years in jail.

Dr. John Bodkin Adams

1899 – 1983

10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (6)

John Bodkin Adams was a British medical doctor, a convicted fraudster and a suspected serial killer. Over a ten-year period (1946 – 1956) a total of 160 of his patients died in suspicious circumstances – and most suspiciously, almost all of them left him money or other valuable assets through their will.

Adams’ medical branch was anesthetics, but he wasn’t the assiduous type – soon after commencing his career he acquired a reputation as a ‘bungler’. He would fall asleep during operations, eat cakes, count money, and even mix up the anesthetic gas tubes, leading to patients waking up during the surgery.

Despite being a far-from-brilliant technician, Adams managed to become the wealthiest doctor in England by 1956, in large part because all of his dying patients were agreeing to leave him their valuable possessions. Dr. Adams was never convicted for any of his crimes even though he was brought to court several times. The prosecution was unable to prove his guilt in any of the suspicious deaths – but the general opinion on Adams is that he was a serial killer that got away with it.

Herman Webster Mudgett (a.k.a. Dr. Henry Howard Holmes) was a graduate of Michigan Medical School and one of the first recorded American serial killers. But while most serial killers lurk in dark corners, Holmes went as far as opening a hotel which he had designed and built with murder in mind.

After completing his “house of terrors” – complete with pits of acid, bedrooms fitted with gas lines, secret chutes and even a stretching rack – Holmes selected mainly female victims among his employees as well as hotel guests. After being tortured to death, the victim`s bodies were dropped to the basement where Holmes performed a meticulous dissection procedure, stripping them of flesh and crafting them into skeleton models.

Even though the verified number of victims is 27, police commented that some of the bodies in the basement were so badly dismembered and decomposed that it was difficult to tell how many bodies there actually were. Some suggest that more than 200 people found their end in Holmes’ hotel.

3

Dr. Harold Shipman

1946 – 2004

10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (8)

Harold Frederick Shipman was a British doctor, and one of the most prolific serial killers in recorded history. He is judged responsible for more than 250 deaths.

After graduating from Leeds School of Medicine, Shipman became a respected member of the British Medical Council. In 1993 he founded his own clinic. His criminal activities didn’t emerge until 1998, when a fellow doctor complained about the high death rate among Shipman’s patients. The police investigation revealed the fact that Dr. Shipman was administering lethal overdoses of diamorphine to his patients, then forging their medical records to indicate they had been in poor health.

Even though Dr. Shipman was sentenced to 15 consecutive life sentences, he didn’t spend long in prison, committing suicide in his cell in 2004.

2

Dr. Shiro Ishii

1892 – 1959

10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (9)

Shiro Ishii was a Japanese microbiologist and a lieutenant general of the biological warfare unit of the Imperial Japanese Army responsible for human experimentation and war crimes during the second Sino–Japanese war.

After graduating Medical school in 1922, Dr. Ishii was assigned to the 1st Army Hospital and Army Medical School in Tokyo – but it was not until 1942 he began his famous experiments on humans as part of a secret project for the Japanese Army. His countless victims (some estimate tens of thousands) were mainly Chinese prisoners of war and civilians. Ishii referred to his victims as maruta (logs), a term originating either his view of them as inert, expendable entities, or in the cover story told to locals that the facility contained a sawmill.

His experiments included bio-weapons exposure, vivisections, forced abortions, simulated strokes, heart attacks, frostbites and hypothermia.
Dr. Shiro Ishii has never been prosecuted for his crimes; he negotiated to trade the information obtained during his experiments to the United States in return for his freedom.

1

Dr. Josef Mengele

1911 – 1979

10 Derailed Doctors Who Creatively Abused Their Patients - Listverse (10)

Josef Rudolf Mengele (a.k.a. “The Angel of Death”) heads our list mainly because he racked up the highest body count, but also due to the unimaginable atrocities masquerading as “medical experiments” he performed on concentration camp inmates during World War II.

After graduating from Frankfurt Medical School, Mengele was conscripted into the army and later volunteered to the medical service of the Waffen SS, where he distinguished himself as a soldier. In 1943 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and sent to the infamous Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, as the camp’s medical officer.

Mengele soon started abusing inmates. He drew lines on the wall of the children’s block, 150 centimeters from the floor – children shorter than the line were sent to the gas chambers. The remaining children were used for human experiments. He was particularly interested in identical twins. After being placed in special barracks, Mengele attempted to change twins’ eye color by injecting chemicals into eyeballs. He performed limb amputations, and would also experiment with sterilisation and shock treatments on girls.

After an experiment was completed, the survivors were usually killed and their bodies dissected. Mengele survived the war and, after a period of living incognito in Germany, he fled to South America, where he evaded capture for the rest of his life, despite being relentlessly hunted as a Nazi war criminal.

A lot of media tend to view news and history through the lens of countries and their big, powerful cities. Though that makes sense from the standpoint of

Urban Exploring the Abandoned Star Hecla Mine Burke Canyon Ghost Town by Jason Lanier Sony A7s. Today, Burke, Idaho, is an abandoned ghost town.. Within just four years of its founding, Burke was the site of a deadly avalanche, a shootout between miners and mine owners, and an accidental mine explosion.. Over the next two decades, Burke was subject to a deadly hotel fire, another mine explosion (this one intentional and malicious), another fatal avalanche, another fire, a flood, and one last fire.. Though Pripyat swelled to almost 50,000 residents at its peak, pushing past the boundary of a small town, it now spends every day with a total population of zero.. After 16 years of habitation, it has now spent 35 years as an irradiated, decaying ghost town.. In its 210-year history, hardly anything of note has occurred in the quaint little country town.. The town isn’t haunted by any murders or massacres.. Instead, Centralia is nearly abandoned and nicknamed “Hell on Earth” for one reason: the whole town is on fire and has been for 59 years.. It took 30 years for the majority of Centralia’s residents to evacuate the city, as sinkholes, open flames, and toxic gas clouds slowly engulfed the town, leaving it the fuming wasteland it is today.. Most towns on this list have histories built partially on murder; it’s a common inciting incident for ghost myths and dubious reputations.. Rarely, however, are towns famous for the murder of the entire town in one incident.. There is almost nothing of note to say about the little village except for one fact: in 1862, it was the site of the single bloodiest day in American history, the Battle of Antietam.. No list of towns with dark, bloody histories would be complete without the most famous haunted town in America: Salem, Massachusetts (more precisely, Salem Village).. The incident has forever linked the town of Salem (and to a lesser extent neighboring Danvers, the modern-day location of Salem Village) to the dangers of religious extremism, unchecked groupthink, and the subversion of due process.

Whenever a celebrity or famous personality dies, the world seems to light up with cries of, “He was too young,” or, “She could have done so much more.” It’s even worse when these celebrities are in their first few decades of life, during a time when they are producing so much work that the world remembers them for.. At the age of 22, this famous singer had accomplished a lot.. He received numerous awards for both roles and was the ninth-youngest nominee ever for a Best Actor Oscar award.. A tremendous amount of support came from fans and fellow actors when she was diagnosed with brain cancer, but she died within the year.. She was declared dead two years later, but in over a hundred years, the wreckage of her plane was never found.. After a ten-minute flight at an airfield, she realized her destiny and started setting world records quickly.. She produced a tremendous amount of work – 50 short stories by the time she got to college – and work of very high quality, recognized by critics immediately.. These are just ten famous people from all walks of life – from adult film star to English monarch – who died too young.. Perhaps some of their fame comes from the fact that they died while they were in their prime, but each led interesting lives and made noteworthy achievements in their lifetime.

The idea of being buried alive has frightened humankind for thousands of years and, as Edgar Allan Poe well knew, fell right into the realm of nightmares.

As these societies began to speak out about the dangers of being buried alive, medical doctors began to devote more time to uncovering the symptoms of death.. To quell his own fears, he requested that an artery be severed before his burial and that a certificate of true death be issued by the Association for the Prevention of Premature Burial.. By making certain that he was very much dead before being buried, he was able to forego the expense of the installation of a bell in case he woke up inside his coffin.. Miss Ruby Caroline Aykroyd of London made a request in her will in 1924 that she wanted the fingernail test performed on her corpse after her death.. As stated by the man from Birmingham, England, two doctors had to examine his deceased body and prove through various tests that he was indeed dead.. In that case, a Dr. Hadwen honored a patient’s request and cut off her head after it was determined that she was dead.. Lady Burton, the wife of Captain Sir Richard Burton, requested that her heart be pierced with a pin to make sure she was dead.. Interestingly enough, a former president of the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia had requested that his heart be removed before burial, proving that even those in the medical profession had doubts about doctors’ abilities to determine if someone was truly dead.. In 1898, it was proposed by one of the many societies created to prevent live burials that if a person did not get autopsied, embalmed , or cremated after death, his next best option might be chloroform.. Perhaps the most common method to preventing premature burial was to simply wait until the supposed dead person showed signs of decay.. The lousy disease was an often cited reason for burying the poor well before they had gone cold because doctors believed that there were worms living in skin tumors and, if not buried immediately, the worms would break through the skin and find new hosts.. Obvious signs of decay had to be witnessed, such as mucus covering the eyes of the deceased, before the body was officially declared dead and ready for burial.. Other death tests conducted in the mortuary were to include the cutting of an artery to make certain that no blood was flowing and holding the fingers of the deceased over a candle flame to see if there was any reaction to pain.

Known officially as apitherapy, the practice of using bee venom to treat medical conditions like rheumatism goes back for thousands of years, some believe as far as ancient Greece.. The treatment itself also varies: Some doctors will prescribe milked bee venom, while others will literally sting the patient with a live bee .. While it would make sense for modern medicine to have moved past something as seemingly barbaric as dumping maggots into an open wound, it’s actually picking up steam again in the medical community—so much so that it’s now covered by some insurance plans .. Although it’s not a mainstream treatment just yet (or ever, hopefully), there are plenty of doctors who have taken up the age-old claim that hookworms, an intestinal parasite, are an effective treatment for allergies.. Most doctors warn their patients against setting their face on fire, but Chinese medical practitioners are reviving the cure more and more often, through burning moxa leaves.. The holes were first drilled with flint, then steel; sometimes a large hole was made by drilling several smaller holes and then connecting them; sometimes it was done by the agonizing process of scraping away layers of bone to make a hole.. Meet the Bathini Gauds, an Indian family that has been administering live fish for over 160 years as a treatment for asthma – and they’re still doing it today.. The treatment involves just what you might (hate to) think: The patient swallows a live fish along with a ball of secret medicine, then sticks to a strict diet for the next forty-five days.. According to the family, millions of people have been cured by the treatment, and over half a million come to see them every year.. Now, the FDA has once again approved thalidomide for medical use—this time as a treatment for bone marrow cancer .

He told victims he was helping them flee the Nazis but that they needed an immunization shot first; instead, he murdered them and stole their belongings.

Although he was arrested in 1999 on suspicion of causing nearly 150 deaths, he only received a 15-year-prison sentence, which only amounts to a little over a month per murder victim.

These "angels of death" took lives when they were supposed to be saving them.

In the 1890s, he poisoned and killed a number of his patients while working in Chicago.. He then traveled to London where he poisoned and killed five hookers before he was arrested and executed in 1892.Wikimedia Commons. H. H. Holmes , sometimes called "America's First Serial Killer," was a medical student and briefly practiced as a doctor in Pennsylvania before he killed between nine and 27 people during the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.. Gwen Graham and Cathy Wood were a pair of nurse's aides at a nursing home in Michigan who began killing their patients as part of a "love bond" that they shared: They killed five victims by smothering them to prove their love to one another.. He would help decide which prisoners were gassed and would perform horrifying experiments (including injections to the eye to change its color, limb amputation, and worse) on other prisoners, many of whom he ended up killing for the purposes of his research.. Michael Swango was a medical student in the 1980s and '90s who took numerous residencies at hospitals across the U.S., during which he would both give patients overdoses of drugs to kill them and poison his coworkers with arsenic.. During the 1980s, Donald Harvey was an orderly at Marymount Hospital in London, Kentucky, where he killed between 37 and 57 of his patients with poison or by giving them infections.. Harold Shipman, nicknamed "Dr. Death," was an English doctor who killed as many as 250 of his patients, most of whom were elderly women, by giving them lethal overdoses of pain medication.

Thousands of people died of his experiments.. After the Second World War, Ishii was arrested by the American forces.. Since he began medical practice in 1974, he has sent more than two hundred people to death.. John Bodkin Adams was a British doctor who was allegedly responsible for the death of 160 patients, especially elderly people, during his practice between 1946 and 1956.

ListverseUltimate Top 10 Lists - Listverse 10 Weird Sources of Energy The pressing need to find new alternative sources of energy has motivated the scientific community to think a little more outside the box – to put it mildly.. A lot of leftover food and waste – such as fruit skins or coffee – can be used to obtain biogas, and there are already a number of small industries collecting and using the trash produced in big cities to generate electricity, a lot like in Back to the Future.. Solar power is already recognized as one of the cleanest energy sources currently available; however, solar panels still have several economic and practical limitations.. Not exactly a wind as we know it, solar wind is more like a constant flow of accelerated particles, which could be used to generate energy using a sail made of copper.. Every day we feel the energy that sound waves can generate: we feel a big truck passing by, or the annoying woofer of our neighbors.. The amount of energy that can be obtained with sound waves is not exactly enormous, but current research is exploring the possibilities of using it to charge small devices, such as cellphones or clocks.. Even if these reached full efficiency, however, external energy would still need to be expended in order to obtain oil from the seeds.. It might seem rather disgusting, but our own pee and poop can be used to obtain energy.. One company in the UK even proposed to keep people warm at funerals with the energy generated by their own siblings or friends.. As things stand, our everyday life is generally one big waste of energy.. But by walking or jumping over special plates, you can use the wasted energy to generate electricity.. Currently, this technology is too expensive to consider as a real solution – but thinking about the amounts of energy wasted in clubs or crowded streets makes it really interesting .. Don’t worry – human bodies can still be useful sources of energy just by being alive.

In fact, locals called her place “Starvation Heights.” In 1912, she was convicted of manslaughter for the death of a wealthy British woman who weighed less than 50 pounds at the time of her death.. In 1881, several patients died, including Daniel Slott, who was found to have died of strychnine poisoning after a supposed remedy for his epilepsy.. Claims of his coworkers stated that he operated on patients who were not on his roster (ie, other doctors’ patients), that he operated unnecessarily, and caused serious injury and death.. Upon pursuing outstanding charges in 2013, Patel pleaded guilty to four charges of fraud and was ultimately sentenced to 2 years in prison, but that was wholly suspended because of the time he already served in jail for the convictions that were overturned by the High Court of Australia.. They requested the body be exhumed, and her cause of death was found to be a morphine overdose within 3 hours of her death, overlapping the time Shipman had been at her home.. An investigation ensued, and it was discovered that Shipman encouraged families to cremate, and if they raised questions, he would show them computerized medical notes that corroborated his cause of death listed on the death certificate.. While Shipman claimed to have called emergency medical services in front of the families and then calling back to cancel the request after the patient died, telephone records showed that no calls were made.. He also exhibited drug-hoarding behaviors, falsely prescribing morphine to patients who didn’t need it, overprescribing it to those who did, and visiting homes of the recently deceased to collect unused medications for “disposal.” Shipman was eventually found guilty of 15 counts of murder and one charge of forgery.. During his senior year in college, Swango wrote his chemistry thesis on the poisoning death of Bulgarian writer Georgi Markov, and since that time, became obsessed with poisons, especially those that could be used as silent killers.. During Swango’s third year of medical school, at least five patients died shortly after being seen by him.

Letting a doctor accused of rape continue to treat patients, as the Cleveland Clinic did, is as significant a risk to patient safety as a fall or a medication error.

The Cleveland Clinic would do well to remember this oath because the clinic, an internationally known health-care institution, has let us down—its patients, its staff, and our community—by turning a blind eye to allegations of sexual abuse by one of its doctors.. In January, USA Today published a shocking report claiming that the famed clinic failed to act when presented with evidence that a colorectal surgeon , Ryan Williams, allegedlyraped two of his patients.. Now it’s time for the Cleveland Clinic, health-care systems, and the medical profession to do better—specifically, to acknowledge that health-care providers can be perpetrators and to abandon business-as-usual practices that value their reputations over their patients.. Williams’ medical assistant told police that when the victim asked Dr. Williams why he raped her, he replied, “I don’t know.” Police declined to pursue charges against Williams, despite finding traces of semen in the exam room, which Williams admitted was his; he said he masturbated in the roomto relieve stress.. The Cleveland Clinic allowed Dr. Williams to continue seeing patients after this, and another patient reported a strikingly similar incident during a procedure with the surgeon a year later.. Williams’ twin brother, Dr. Bryan Williams, had his medical license permanently revoked in 2017 after being accused of sexual assault by seven different patients.. Doctors and hospitals aren’t required to tell patients if one of their doctors has a history of or is currently being disciplined for sexual misconduct.. If hospitals refuse to shield patients from sexual abuse and hold their employees accountable when crimes are committed, how can they possibly expect patients to feel safe seeking their services?. If health-care providers aren’t sure if the physician to whom they’re referring patients won’t hurt people, are they able to provide the best possible care for the patients they serve?. If hospitals refuse to shield patients from sexual abuse and hold their employees accountable when crimes are committed, how can they possibly expect patients to feel safe seeking their services?

It was subsequently revealed that serum taken from the horse on September 30 onwards was infected with incubation-phase tetanus.. The scandal led to the passing of the FDCA, but the Massengill Company was only subject to a minimum fine due to the stipulations of the previous 1906 Pure Food and Drugs Act.. In October 2012, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) followed the trail of an outbreak of fungal meningitis back to the contamination of medication administered as epidural steroid injections.. The offending ingredient led to no less than 365 deaths in Panama and was traced back to China.. The product was not taken up, and the Japanese Ministry of Health acted by ordering that untreated blood products be screened, by carrying out tests on heat-treating, and by encouraging the public to give blood.

Sometimes I still believe the doctors who gaslit me.

Every time I go to the doctor, I sit on the examination table and mentally prepare myself to be disbelieved.. Patients of color experience bias and are examined less thoroughly than their white counterparts, which may explain why many wait longer before seeking out care.. I can confidently say that doctors who jump to attribute patients’ physical symptoms to mental illness are too often sorely mistaken.. But doctors hold great power in having the last word in patient’s minds, even long after an appointment ends.. When doctors mistakenly conclude that a person’s symptoms are ‘all in their head,’ they delay a correct physical diagnosis.. A 2015 study interviewed women who had been hospitalized but were reluctant to seek medical care, citing anxiety about “being perceived as complaining about minor concerns” and “feeling rebuffed or treated with disrespect.”. The fear of being mistaken about my physical symptoms, and subsequently laughed at and dismissed, lingered months after I was diagnosed with two chronic conditions.

Domestic abuse and violence comes from a belief system that tells the abusive person that they have the right to control their partner, and that they are justified in using whatever means necessary to maintain that control.. Survivors report that stopping the abusive person’s substance use has not stopped the abuse.. Both abusive behavior and substance use need to be addressed separately, as independent problems that overlap in many individuals 1 .. At first, this may look like the survivor is “just as bad” as their partner, but we must look at the overall power dynamic and intent behind each action.. Survivors of abuse often make repeated attempts to leave their abusive partners.. National Coalition on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health.. 6 Bancroft, L. (2002).

Two White House staffers stepped down from their jobs in recent weeks after being accused of domestic abuse, and the White House defended both men. The president suggested that the men should be given the benefit of the doubt, noting in a tweet that "lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere...

"Domestic violence is a workplace issue, not just a 'personal' issue," said Maya Raghu, director of workplace equality for the National Women's Law Center in Washington, D.C."Even if the violence occurs away from work, it has significant financial and security impacts on the workplace, from lost productivity, lost days from work, and threats to safety.". Experiencing domestic abuse is traumatizing, said Daniel Cox Malyszka, SHRM-CP, CHRO of The SAFE Alliance.. I didn't know how to process that," said Cox Malyszka.. Cox Malyszka suggested the following tactics for employers handling domestic abuse concerns:. Cox Malyszka's boss gave him time off to deal with his situation and reminded him about resources available through the employee assistance program (EAP).. Be aware, Cox Malyszka advised, that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act may apply to job applicants and employees who experience domestic or dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking.. Sometimes the abuser shows up at the workplace—that has happened at organizations where Cox Malyszka has worked—and organizations need to be prepared.. Cox Malyszka recommended training employees on what to do if someone comes into the workplace and makes threats.. People think that because they have not been abused, they never will be, Cox Malyszka said.

The Crucible is largely concerned with the abuse and misuse of power in Salem. Discuss this with references to any three characters. In this essay I intend to explore the abuse and misuse of power in Salem with references to three characters. The three characters that I will refer to are Reverend Pa...

The three characters that I will refer to are Reverend Parris, Thomas Putnam and Abigail Williams.. The towns people also do not respect him as a man of God because Proctor says “to hear him preach only hellfire and bloody damnation” about the services that are held in Salem where Parris preaches.. As a man of god Parris should be grateful for what the towns people have to offer and what they are prepared to give in to the Church as an act of charity.. This is an example of misuse of power because Reverend Parris has the power to put a stop to the girls but to keep his name clean he pressures the girls to give more names.. He reveals Abigail’s motivation to see Elizabeth Proctor condemned: Abigail cannot let go of her obsession with Proctor.. When the girls talk about admitting to dancing in the woods Abigail tells Betty and Mary Warren “I will bring a pointy reckoning” who initially express fear about their actions in the woods and express a desire to confess.. The people of Salem and the majority of the people of that time were racist and thought of themselves as a higher class than black people; the same as Parris feels towards children.. Abigail gains revenge on the people in the village that she has hated or envied especially Elizabeth Proctor.. Another example of Abigail’s misuse of power is when she deviously puts a needle into her stomach and into a doll’s stomach and accuses Elizabeth of putting it there.
